Carol McGill Discusses Becoming a Paralegal
I did not set out to be a paralegal - I wanted to be a teacher. When I graduated from college, I joined VISTA and served for a year with the Utah Migrant Council. Along with my fellow volunteers, I worked as an advocate for the farm workers. It was during this time that I began to see how lawyers were able to help the "outcasts" in our society. I did some research and happened up information about a "new" career choice - paralegal. It so happened that Kline Strong had established a paralegal program at the University of Utah, so I signed up. While taking classes, I started working at the Salt Lake County Bar Legal Services with the attorney in charge of housing disputes. I have always had a soft spot for the underdog and being a paralegal gave me the opportunity to be part of a team that could get a fair shake for those in our communities who may never have had that chance. Everyone needs a chance to participate on a level playing field.
