Rituxan link to Brain Infections

Rituxan, a drug approved to treat rheumatoid arthritis and non-Hodgkins lymphoma, has been linked to a rare and deadly brain infection called progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy, or PML. Rituxan has also been used by physicians for the treatment of systemic lupus erythematosus, or SLE, an autoimmune disease that causes arthritis.

Rituxan's Side Effects

In December 2006, the FDA sent out an alert to physicians and the public that two patients with lupus that were prescribed Rituxan died from the PML infection. According to the FDA alert, 23 rheumatoid arthritis and lymphoma patients have confirmed cases of PML.

"Rituxan is used in both approved and off-label settings, and therefore it is very important for prescribers as well as patients to be aware of these new reports of the risk of PML," said Dr. Steven Galson, director of FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. "Patients who are being treated or have been treated with Rituxan who experience any major changes in vision, balance, or coordination, or who experience confusion, should promptly call their doctor. "Patients have contracted the brain illness while or shortly after being treated with Rituxan.

There is no known cure for PML.

Rituxan is a powerful immunosuppressant that eliminates certain B-cells for up to nine months. This can allow previously inactivated and deadly viruses to be reactivated, causing PML.

Common misspellings of Rituxan include Rituxin, Rituxen, Retuxan, Retuxin and Ritaxun.

Rituxan Personal Injury, Wrongful Death, Lawyers and Lawsuits

The law in most states provides personal injury and wrongful death claims for persons who have been seriously injured or killed by a prescription drug with dangerous, undisclosed side effects. These claims include strict liability for a defective product, breach of warranty, negligence, and misrepresentation.

Damages sought against pharmaceutical companies for serious injuries due to drug side effects include claims for economic losses such as:

  • Past and Future Medical Bills
  • Past and Future Wage Loss Claims
  • Hospice and Home Care
  • Funeral Expenses

Damages also include awards for the most important loss, to the person and the family:

  • Wrongful Death
  • Grief, Pain and Suffering
  • Loss of Companionship

At times, when a company has acted with fraud, malice, or indifference, the law will permit an award of punitive damages. These damages are designed to punish a wrongdoer and to deter the wrongdoer from ever acting in this maner in the future.

How Does Rituxan Cause PML?

Rituxan is a powerful immunosuppressant that eliminates mature circulating B-cells for up to nine months. This can allow previously inactivated and deadly viruses such as J-C that most adults have to be reactivated, causing PML. A devastating neurological deterioration, PML has no known cure.

Rituxan is manufactured by Genentech, Inc. of South San Francisco, California. Common misspellings of Rituxan include Rituxin, Rituxen, Retuxan, Retuxin and Ritaxun.
