Trasylol's Deadly Complications

Patients who were given the blood clotting agent Trasylol during heart bypass, heart valve replacement, or other cardiac procedures were deemed by the FDA more likely to die from complications than patients who were given similar, competing drugs.  The maker of Trasylol, Bayer AG, suspended sales of the drug that more than 4.5 million people had been administered worldwide.  Nearly one third of the users were in the United States during the 14 years that it was available in the US market.

Trasylol was found to contribute to:

  • Strokes
  • Kidney failure
  • Heart attacks
  • Heart failure

Trasylol was approved and hit the market in 1993.  Sales of the drug reached nearly $300 million in 2005, with even higher figures estimated in the years following until its recall. While similar clotting agents were available for a fraction of the cost, Bayer AG aggressively marketed Trasylol and patients routinely paid up to $1000 for this ultimately harmful drug.  Bayer AG initially stated that the recall was just temporary.  In an official company press release they stated that "Bayer believes that the totality of the available data continue to support a favorable risk-benefit profile for Trasylol when used according to labeling”.

Trasylol Wrongful Death, Personal Injury Lawyer and Lawsuits

The law in most states allows for several personal injury claim options for those seriously injured due to defective prescription drugs and treatments. These claims include negligence, failure to warn, and strict liability for a defective product.  Bayer AG has currently not been penalized by the FDA, meaning the only means of obtaining due compensation is to file a personal injury claim.  Damages sought against drug manufacturers can include compensation for:

  • Physical pain and suffering, mental anguish and physical impairment
  • Past and future medical expenses
  • Loss of earnings and/or earning capacity
  • Punitive damages for extreme wrongful conduct
