Gadolinium Lawyers, Beth Klein P.C.
In September 2007, Beth Klein, P.C. began representing clients who have been diagnosed with Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF), also called Nephrogenic Fibrosing Dermopathy (NFD) after undergoing an MRI or MRA in which gadolinium-containing contrast dyes were used.
Gadolinium-based contrast agents known as GBCAs are contrast dyes that contain gadolinium which are commonly used when patients undergo an MRI. Gadolinium is a magnetic metal ion and is used in dyes to enhance MRI and MRA images. These contrast agents are injected into the body. Five gadolinium-based contrast agents have been approved for use in the United States:
Magnevist gadopentetate dimeglumine Approved June 2, 1988
Ominiscan gadodiamide Approved January 8, 1993
OptiMARK gadoversetamide Approved December 8, 1999
MultiHance gadobenate dimeglumine Approved November 23, 1994
Prohance gadoteridol Approved November 16, 1992
Reports have identified the development of NSF following single and multiple administrations of the gadolinium-based contrast agents. The reports have not always identified a specific agent. When a single product was used, and NSF developed in the patient, General Electric's product, Omniscan, was the most commonly reported gadolinium based agent. Magnevist and OptiMARK followed as the second and third most reported agents associated with a report of NSF.
NSF/NFD Symptoms
Although cases vary, it can take months to develop symptoms of NSF/NFD. Cases of rapid and full progression of the disease have resulted in death. If you experience any of the symptoms of NSF/NFD after and MRI or MRA, you should seek immediate medical attention, and get tested for the disease. Symptoms include:
- Tightening and swelling of the skin, typically starting in the lower extremities and moving to the arms and sometimes the trunk
- Thickening of the skin around the joints, restricting movement
- Skin which feels thick and stiff and looks like black or redish scarred orange peel
- Red or dark patches of skin
- Burning, itching, and/or sharp pains in affected areas
- Fluctuating hypertension preceding the appearance of skin lesions
- Symmetrical skin lesions, commonly on the ankles and thighs and between the wrists and upper arms
- Muscle weakness
- Deep bone pain in the hips and ribs
- Calcification of soft tissues
- Yellow plaques near the eyes
