Vacationing Family Poisoned by Pesticide

With summer approaching, many people are planning on taking a well-deserved break from work and school and are heading out on a family vacation. Sometimes it can take years to save for the family vacation you have always dreamed of and the family spends many hours anxiously awaiting the special trip. People are happy to spend their hard earned dollars to get away and relax with those they love most. But what happens when that dream vacation turns deadly?

While vacationing in the U.S. Virgin Islands, a family of four was rushed back to their home in Delaware after being poisoned. Terminix, a pest control company with headquarters in Tennessee, was hired to spray the condo below the unit in which the family was staying for their vacation. Terminix used methyl bromide, a potent pesticide that is extremely toxic to humans, even though it is not cleared for residential use.

Methyl bromide has been called “highly toxic” by the Environmental Protection Agency and has restricted its use for over twenty years. Breathing in methyl bromide, even for a short time, can cause lung damage. Exposure to this chemical over a longer time can cause neurologic damages. Due to the exposure to the toxin, both parents are recovering slowly and still suffer from seizures. Worse, their children, ages 14 and 16, continue to struggle to eat, walk, and sit up. Before their trip, these boys were already touring colleges and were likely to receive scholarships as student athletes.
